I recently received my Tops Smoke Jumper, and I have to tell you that I am impressed! Like most Tops knives, the Smoke Jumper is a quality tool that is, for the most part, unsurpassed in the world of mass-production knives. I own probably anywhere between 100 to 150 various types of knives, from the smallish KA-Bar TDI Last Ditch Knife to the large Smoke Jumper. I even have a few that are bigger, but honestly, most of my bigger blades see limited use even when hiking and camping in areas where they would be most effective. Truth is, I just like knives! That being said, I find the Tops SJ to be a tool that can be used for a variety of purposes, to include hacking through thick vegetation or moderate tree limbs, use as a pry bar (the spine closest to the blade's tip is thick enough to support this sort of hard use), and as a trenching tool. I suppose it could be used as a skinning knife, if push came to shove, but unless the SJ was your only option, I believe a smaller, lighter blade would be better for something along those lines. The jimping is first class, making the knife's ergonomics even that much better when the need for a more forward grip becomes necessary. The finger choil is also a nice addition for choking-up on the knife. Now, I know that some folks don't care that much about any factory handles, but I think the majority of buyers will like and appreciate the feel of these micarta handles. They just feel good in your hand! As for the glass breaker at the rear of the full tang knife, it looks more than adequate to do what it's supposed to do--and then some. The weight and balance of the Tops SJ is also good, with most of the weight distributed toward the front, thereby aiding greatly when chopping. Finally, the kydex sheath is a nice touch. Personally, I prefer kydex over leather sheaths. That, however, is a matter of personal preference. To each his own, I say. If you feel the need to make any modifications to the sheath, or even purchase a different style or type, then go for it! It's always nice to have options, and plenty certainly abound.I highly recommend the Tops Smoke Jumper!
